The tube is filled with high-pressure nitrogen, forcing the piston and piston rod to extend. The gas pressure is carefully adjusted to obtain correct spring force, depending on, for example, the weight of the rear hatch. As the spring compresses there is less volume in the tube, forcing gas through valves in the piston, thus increasing the suspension. The gas springs contains some oil to lubricate washers, piston and piston rod. The oil also works as a damper when the spring is fully extended.
